Optimax on Board

For the Mercury Messanger mission, the instruments had to be designed specifically to be fortified against the unrelenting heat. Optimax was chosen to supply NASA with high-quality imaging lenses designed for position sensing, mapping landforms, and optical analysis within these specifications.

Mission Details

To study Mercury's chemical composition, geology, and magnetic field.

Messenger's power comes mainly from its solar array. The power produced by the solar array is stored in a battery and then distributed to the other systems.

This satellite provided evidence that Mercury's polar craters contain water ice.

LAUNCHED: August 3, 2004
